How to Plan for the Parks in September & October

  • Posted on

What can you expect for weather in September and October In Orlando?  And how do you pack for it?   You will be guaranteed hot and humid, and almost daily short-lived rain showers.  Here’s how to pack to be prepared for whatever the weather will throw at you when out and about in the parks.

Q:  Will it be warm enough for swimming?

A:  Yes you will still want to pack a bathing suit and cover up for the resort pools or water parks as you will have typical daytime temperatures in the 80’s F.

  1. Will it be too rainy to go to the parks?

A:  Orlando showers are generally short-lived bursts of rain and can be handled easily with a little preparation.  Be sure to pack ponchos or rain jackets in your backpacks to go to the park as well as umbrellas.  It’s also important to have footwear that is water repellent or bring alternative dry shoes to change into after a rain.  And don’t forget a dry pair of socks!!  Your backpack should also be water repellent or fit under your poncho to ensure you don’t get everything in it soaked.

PRO TIP #1 – when the shower ends you will now have a very wet poncho or rain jacket and might not want to put it back into your bag.  Bring along a plastic shopping bag or large zip-lock to put all wet gear into once the rain shower is over.

PRO TIP #2 – ponchos are expensive at the parks.  Plan to purchase them at home and bring them to Orlando with you.  Why do this instead of purchasing when you get to Orlando?  First it means you don’t have to waste valuable vacation time shopping for them.  And second, many of the touristy areas are shopped out of reasonably priced ponchos and you either end up paying more than you should, or travelling further afield than you want to find them.

  1. Will I still need sun protection in September and October.

A:  Yes you definitely will!  And don’t forget a hat and sunglasses – the weather will still call for these items during much of your trip, even during this fall time of year.

Q:  What are evening/nighttime temperatures like?

A:  Night times can start to cool off a bit and especially if there is an evening breeze.  It is a good idea to pack a sweater, light jacket and long pants for the evenings.

Q:  Can I dress up in a costume when going to a Halloween event at the parks (eg. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party).

A:  You absolutey can but be sure to do your homework, as some parks have dress codes that must be followed.

Q:  How do I dress for the weather?

A:  Generally, tourists coming to Florida will find the daytime temperatures quite warm/hot (80’s – 90’s F.)  And the humidity is high which makes the temperature feel even warmer.  Dress in lightweight shorts, tank-tops and shirts for daytime excursions.  But be sure to keep layers handy if you are out for the day, so you are prepared for rain showers or temperatures cooling down at night. You will see locals wearing jeans, jackets/sweaters, long sleeves etc. during the day but they are acclimatized after a long summer of extreme heat and these fall temperatures now feel cool to them.

A trip to Orlando in September and October is a fantastic time of year to go.  The weather is still nice enough to enjoy the outdoors and sunshine but cooled off a bit from the intense summer heat.  The main thing is to be prepared for sudden weather changes with quickly-appearing rain showers and the temperature dropping when the sun goes down. A little planning and you will be just fine.  And of course, if you get cool in the evening, it is always a great excuse to purchase a souvenir hoodie or sweatshirt as a memento of your wonderful trip!
